Floods & landslides wreck havoc in Nepal

In Nepal, flood and landslide caused by incessant rains in various parts of the country since past few days have claimed about a dozen lives and inundated hundreds of acres of land in at least nine districts, mostly in Tarai region. At least four persons were swept by flood waters in Ilam, Makwanpur and Tanahun while six people others were killed when their houses were buried in the landslide flowing heavy rainfall in Panchathar,Tapleyjung and Bhaktapur districts. Most of the rivers in the plains including Mahakali, Madi, Rapti and Kosi are flowing above danger level. Executive Engineer, Kosi Barrage Mr. Sarjananda Singh told AIR that water level in Saptakoshi has increased following incessant rainfall in catchment areas and till yesterday 3,40,000 cusec of water was flowing in the Kosi barrage. Singh said engineers are maintaining constant vigil on the flow of water and taking all possible preventive measures. An official team led by Nepal's Chief Secretary Madhav Prasad Ghimerey today visited flood affected areas of Kalilai and Kanchenpur districts to assess the damage caused by the Mahakali River and relief and rescue measures.
