Floods force lakhs of people to take shelter in relief camps in Assam

In Assam, relief works are in full swing as more than four lakh 85 thousand people have taken shelter in 622 relief camps. Medical teams and Mobile Medical Units have been deployed in the camps and the areas still reeling under floods.

The death toll in flood and landslides has gone up to 124 while 17 people are still missing. The flood situation in Dhemaji district continues to be grim with 325 villages in the district severely affected. Surging water washed away 900 homes and 3 Mini Primary Health Centres and also disrupted surface communication.

Altogether about 60 lakh people in five thousand 682 villages have been affected by recent wave of floods. State Governor J B Patnaik yesterday made an aerial survey of the flood affected Nagaon, Darrang, Kamrup and Sonitpur districts.The Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger level at Nematighat and Dhubri.
