Flood under control in Punjab

In Punjab, barring Sangrur district, the flood situation in all other five affected districts of the state is under control as the accumulated flood-water has started receding.

These districts are Patiala, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mohali and Ropar. The situation in many parts of the most affected Patiala district has also improved. However, due to the increased discharge of floodwater, which has flowed through Ghaggar river via Sangrur, another breach has occurred resulting in affecting total fifty villages in Sangrur district.

Punjab Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon has confirmed to AIR Jalandhar correspondent that the situation in these fifty villages of Sangrur will take some time to come under control. Relief and rescue operations are on.
Meanwhile, water level has started increasing in Bhakra Dam and Pong dam reservoirs. Level of water in Gobind Sagar reservoir of Bhakhra Dam has reached to 1546 feet. Inflow of water in the reservoir is 45,765 cusecs while outflow is 15,349 cusecs. It has capacity of 1680 feet. Level of Pong Dam reservoir is at 1291 feet with water inflow of 25,837 cusecs and outflow of 7,400 cusecs. Pong dam’s capacity is 1,390 ft. BBMB experts say that if the monsoon does not weaken in the next few weeks, both reservoirs can fill up to their adequate capacity. With the increase in the water levels, power generation has increased.
