In Odisha, the flood situation has worsened further as rain continued in the upper catchments of Mahanadi river especially in neigbouring Chattisgarh. As many as 59 sluice gates of Hirakud dam has been opened to discharge excess rain water. About 13 to 14 lakh cusec of water is likely to reach Munduli near Cuttack by tomorrow afternoon, creating lots of apprehension among thousands of people living in the low lying areas.The flood situation in Odisha is creating havoc. About 1,437 villages in 14 districts of Odisha have been affected by the current flood. So far, eight persons have lost their lives in the flood in Sundergarh, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Mayurbhanj and Sambalpur district, while three persons have been swept away in flood water in Nayagarh. Report of 8,357 dwelling houses being damaged has been received from Bargarh, Boudh, Deogarh, Jajpur, Nuapada and Sambalpur district. About 3,797 persons have been evacuated by the administration from low lying areas in Balasore, Boudh, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur and Subarnapur district.Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today reviewed the flood situation and directed concerned departments to take suitable measures to tackle the situation. He has also directed district collectors to provide emergent food assistance for seven days in the affected and marooned areas. The Central Government has been alerted about the situation and Odisha government has sought helicopters for air-dropping operations.
