In Odisha, there has been no respite to thousands of flood-affected people as a large number of villages are still marooned. The situation is alarming in many parts of Jajpur and Kendrapada districts with relief not reaching the marooned people even after six days. Though water has started receding in major rivers like Brahmani, Baitarani, Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga and Mahanadi the flood situation continues to be grim in many areas.Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday visited flood-affected Subarnapur district today. A 4-member Central team is also visiting Sambalpur, Bargarh and Subarnapur districts to assess the damage in the flood. Odisha government has requested the Centre to give 2,400 kilo letres of kerosene as additional quota to the state considering the severe flood.Marooned people have taken shelter over river embankments, house roofs and trees. Road communication to many flood-affected areas have been cut-off leading to rise of prices of essential commodities. Choppers have been pressed into relief operation but they have failed to drop dry food packets in many marooned villages as the flood water level is very high.According to reports received from Odisha government, the death toll in the second phase of flood has increased to 27, with a total of about 23 lakh people in 3,415 villages and 12 cities in 10 of the 30 districts being affected in the flood.
