In Odisha, large area is still under flood water despite receding of major rivers like Brahmani, Baitarani, Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga, Mahanadi. Large tracts of Jajpur and Kendrapada districts are still cut off from rest of the world and the situation is still grim. The situation is likely to continue for another two days. Thousands of people starving for last six days without getting government-sponsored relief. As many as 1,176 villages are still marooned and peole have taken shelter over river embankments, house roofs and trees as flood water has entered or damaged their houses. Road communication to many flood-affected areas have been cut-off leading to rise of prices of essential commodities. Seven choppers have been pressed into relief operation but they have failed to drop dry food packets in many marooned villages as the flood water level is very high.According to reports received from Odisha government, the death toll in the second phase of flood has increased to 20, with a total of about 22 lakh people in 3,415 villages and 12 cities in 10 of the 30 districts being affected in the second phase of flood.Meanwhile, Odisha government has requested the Centre to give 2,400 kilo letre of kerosene as additional quota to the state considering the severe flood. Flood in Mahnadi river system in the second week of this month had affected 3.4 million people in 19 districts, causing 39 human casualties and a loss of Rs 2,122 crore to the State.
