In Odisha, flood situation is still alarming in most of the northern and coastal areas. Major rivers like Baitarani, Brahmani and Subarnarekha are rising and flowing above the danger level. Thousands of people are marooned since four days and waiting for the government relief to reach them. A large tracts of Angul, Balasore, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Kendrapada and Mayurbhanj districts have been submerged in flood water. The situation in Jajpur, Kendrapada and Bhadrak districts, which were hit by the first-phase flood in the Mahanadi river system only a few days ago, have been severely affected. Most of the marooned people have taken shelter over the roof tops, embankments or trees. Air dropping of dry foods by two helicopters started from Saturday in flood-hit areas of Jajpur, Kendrapada and Keonjhar districts. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik spoke to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and Union Defence Minister AK Anthony over the flood situation in Odisha. The state government has also requested the Indian Air Force to give four more helicopters to carry out the relief operation. According to reports received from the Odisha government, 2,362 villages and 6 cities of eight districts in the state have been affected in the second spell of flood. So far six people have lost their lives. More than 1,54,000 people have been affected and 992 villages are still marooned in the current flood. Home ministry officials said in New Delhi on Saturday, five teams of National Disaster Response Force, NDRF, comprising 155 personnel have been deployed for rescue and relief operations. The teams have 29 boats, 60 lifebuoys, 60 life jackets, 5 emergency lights and 5 generator sets .The rescue and relief operations have been launched in Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Baleswar,Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar. The relief teams have already started evacuating the marooned people to safer places. Of the five NDRF teams, four were deployed at Jajpur and one at Kendrapara. Additional r 5 teams from Mundeli comprising 150 men have been despatched to the flood affected areas. Two helicopters have been deployed for air dropping of food packets. Another four helicopters are being deployed for the same purpose.
