UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Defence Minister A.K. Antony have made an aerial survey of the natural calamity affected areas in Uttarakhand today. Heavy rain lashed the State for several days.Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi today urged the Centre to have an immediate assessment of the damage caused by floods and cloud bursts in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. A party press release said that she spoke to the Prime Minister on phone and pleaded for a liberal package to the affected States released through the National Calamity Relief Fund.Meanwhile, two Army officers, including a Colonel, were killed in an avalanche in Chamoli district.Rescue and relief operation is in full swing with the help of Army, ITBP and NDRF. Met department predicts moderate to rather heavy rain may occur in the state especially in Garhwal region. The water level in the Yamuna river today reached 206.18 metres, 1.35 metres above the danger mark, following the release of 7.44 lakh cusecs of water by Haryana.According to Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control department, the water level in the river is increasing at the speed of 3.4 cm per hour.The water level in the river has crossed 206 metres mark at around 1200 hrs today, which has forced authorities to close the Old Railway Bridge.According to railway sources , train services across the Old Railway Bridge have been suspended and diverted to other routes as precautionary measures.In Uttar Pradesh, the raging rivers continued to wreck havoc in 33 districts of western UP.The rivers Yamuna, Ganga, and Ramganga are still rising in Bijnore, Moradabad, Farrukhabad, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, and Bareilly districts. AIR correspondent reports that rescue and relief work is in full swing.In Haryana, the river Yamuna is flowing above danger mark. The State Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Revenue, Mr Naresh Gulati said that the field staff of Irrigation Department in Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat, Faridabad and Palwal has also been alerted and all possible measures are being taken for protection of the vulnerable sites. Round-the-clock vigil is being maintained to avoid any damage due to floods.
