Heavy rain lashed large parts of north and central India killing 12 people in the region. Six people perished in Uttarakhand and three each in Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The road network in Uttarakhand hills has been badly affected due to heavy rain in the state. A large number of residents in Uttarakashi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag are facing shortage of essential commodities since the last few days. The Met department has forecast light to moderate rain at many places and heavy rain at isolated places especially in adjoining areas of Himachal Pradesh in the Garhwal region. AIR correspondent reports, as per reports a number of houses were collapsed in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts due to heavy rains. From Rishikesh-to Gangotri and Badrinath roads have been blocked due to debris at several places. According to the officials the supply of cooking gas along with petrol and diesel has been badly affected. Meanwhile Border road organisation and district administration officials are working round the clock to restore the road communication in the affected areas. According to met department 67 millimetre rain recorded in Uttarkashi during last 24 hours. In Uttar Pradesh, there is no respite from the flood fury that has spread to several more districts. The number of flood-hit districts has risen to 24 affecting a population of nearly 13 lakh. About 1,962 villages spread across 72 tehsils were flood-affected besides more than 2 lakh hectare agriculture area was also inundated due to floods. River Ganga was flowing above the red mark at Fatehgarh, Ballia and Kannauj, while the Ramganga has crossed the red mark in Shahjahanpur and Yamuna in Agra and Mathura. Release of water in the Ganga from Narora dam has led to a flood-like situation in Ghaziabad, Kannauj, Kanpur, Rae Bareli, Allahabad and Ballia. Hundreds of low lying villages have been flooded due to the rise in water level of the Ganga which is touching the danger mark at many places. River Ghaghara, which flooded a number of villages in Gonda and Barabanki districts, was flowing above the danger level at Elgin Bridge, Ayodhya and Turtipar in Ballia. Release of water from dams in Nepal has aggravated the floods in Sharda, Ghaghra and Rapti. The three rivers have affected over 1000 villages in Baharaich, Barabanki, Gonda, Lakhimpur Kheri, Balrampur, Faizabad and Siddharthnagar. Thousands of people have been shifted to safer places in different districts and relief camps have been set up in flood affected districts. In the current spell of flood about 3000 houses were damaged. Flood wings of the PAC and the National Disaster Relief Force have been deployed in the flood affected areas. Delhiites got respite from muggy conditions with heavy rain lashing parts of the Capital and turning the weather fairly pleasant. In Chhatisgarh three people were killed and as many were injured when lightning struck Gariaband area. Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall lashed few places in Haryana and Punjab with mercuring hovering close to normal levels Assam Government has announced a one- hundred crore rupees special package for the worst flood-hit Dhemaji district for immediate repairing and rehabilitation measures. The State Chief Minister Mr.Tarun Gogoi announced this after visiting the flood-affected areas of the district on Tuesday. He said one lakh rupees ex-gratia will be paid to the kin of those lost their lives in the latest floods in the district. Besides, 25 thousand rupees assistance will be provided to each of those who lost a pucca house. 10 thousand rupees will be given against each kutcha house. The Chief Minister reviewed the situation with the top district, Railway and Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) authorities at Dhemaji. He instructed the officials to work out suitable schemes for repairing the flood damages and asked to execute those on war-footing. Around two lakh people in the district were badly hit following flash floods in Gaai and Jia Dhol Rivers last week. Although the flood waters receded, around four thousand people are still taking shelter in nine make-shift relief camps set up by the administration due to damage of their houses and properties. Huge areas of standing paddy crops have been damaged besides claiming 14 lives by the floods. The rushing flood waters washed away large portions of the National Highway 52 and the Railway line connecting the district at Sisi Borgaon-Tokobari area. Direct road communication to the district along with three other districts of neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh- East, West and Upper Siang, is still cut off.
