Flood situation in UP aggravates with 3 lakh affected; 300 reported missing

In Uttar Pradesh, more than three lakh people in seven districts along the terai have been hit by the swelled mountain rivers which are in spate due to the cloudburst in Nepal. District administrations of Bahraich, Gonda, Balrampur and Lakhimpuri Kheri said around 300 people are missing, with fears being expressed that they might have got swept away. Nearly 500 villages in Bahraich, Shrawasti, Balrampur, Gonda and Lakhimpur Kheri are hit, mostly by a swollen Saryu, Rapti, and Ghaghara, besides several of mountain Nallahas.

State principal secretary irrigation, Deepak Singhal said that water in the Saryu barrage reached its highest-ever levels on Friday as a result of the cloud burst, breaching the 2.5 lakh cusecs mark. To ensure that the dams are not affected, all the flood gates have been opened. Water has started receding. But problems persist on the Nepal side, he said. The administration is carrying out the relief and rescue work on a war footing with the help of NDRF, SSB and PAC.
