In Odisha, flood situation is likely to worsen by Saturday evening. The Mahanadi river system has threatened to inundate large tracts of 14 districts as about 13.5 lakh cusec water set to pass through Munduli barrage near Cuttack by Saturday afternoon. Thousands of people living in the low lying areas of coastal districts are fleeing to safer places as an imminent flood is set to engulf a large number of human habitations. As many as 59 sluice gates of Hirakud dam have been opened to discharge excess rain water that heightened the flood fear. AIR correspondent reports, the huge discharge of flood water from Hirakud dam, the downstream of Mahanadi , is grappling with an impending disaster.Many low lying areas in Subarnapur, Boudh, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Bargarh, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Sambalpur and Jagatsinghpur district have been witnessing inundation and people are being shifted to safer places. So far, at least eight people have lost their life due to the flood. About 6.5 lakh people have been marooned in 1500 villages of 39 blocks and eight urban local bodies in 14 districts in the current flood. The state government has directed district collectors to provide emergent food assistance for seven days in the affected and marooned areas. All the schools in the high-alert districts have been asked to close down till improvement inthe flood situation. The schools premises will be utilised as safe shelter for the affected people and for storing relief materials. Dry foods and disaster mitigation teams have been sent to different marooned areas. In Uttarakhand, roads leading to Himalayan shrines of Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri, have been closed at various places. AIR correspondent reports, in Uttar Pradesh two women were killed in separate incidents of wall collapse. Mirzapur received maximum rainfall of 148 milimetres. In Punjab and Haryana, several parts of the region have been inundated in low lying areas snapping power and water supply. Most of the rivers in the region are in spate. Chandigarh received 66 milimetres of rain. Delhi received 67 milimetres of rainfall on Friday. Weatherman has predicted more rain in Delhi during the next 24 hours.
