In Odisha, the flood situation in northern parts of the state, triggered by cyclone Phalin and resultant heavy rains, continues to remain grim as major rivers are in spate.
More than 75,000 people are still marooned in flood water as the death toll in the calamities mounted to 28.
Reports of relief not reaching to thousands of marooned people in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Keonjhar districts have been pouring in even after three days of the flood.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced ex-gratia assistance of 4 lakh rupees to the next of kin of each of the deceased in cyclone and flood.
AIR Correspondent reports, the water level in rivers like Budhabalang and Jalaka have started receding, giving respite to the affected people in some parts of the worst-hit Balasore district, while mighty Subarnarekha is still in spate flowing above the danger-level and it is feared to submerge vast areas in Basta, Baliapal, Bhogarai and Jaleswar areas of the district, In Mayurbhanj district, Badasahi block has been the worst-hit and is cut-off from the rest of the world.
Road communication between Manitri-Baisinga has been completely disrupted due to detachment of bridge over river Budhabalanga. National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) vice-chairman Sashidhar Reddy discussed on the rehabilitation work in cyclone and flood affected areas of Odisha with Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at Bhubaneswar last evening.
Cyclone and floods affected about 1.2 crore people in 16,487 villages of 2015 gram panchayats and 43 urban local bodies spread over 148 blocks of the state. Standing crops with over 6,25,408 hectare area had been destroyed, 3,76,608 houses were also damaged due to the cyclone and floods.
Cyclone Phailin is weakening gradually in Bihar and it has claimed at least 9 lives so far, in the state.
Today is crucial for the Nepal bordering districts where Met department has predicted heavy rainfall and it can be creating flood-like situation.
Met department also added that light rainfall will be continuing today in the North and Central Bihar and situation is likely to improve from today evening.
The state government has announced a relief of 2 lakh rupees each to the families of those killed in this incident.
AIR Patna Correspondent reports that Bagmati river has crossed the danger mark at Runi Saidpur while Punpun river is breaching the danger mark at Kinjar due to the continuous rainfall.
The state is still on high alert for possible flood in Kosi and the NDRF and SDRF teams have been sent to Purnia for rescue operation, if needed.
