Flood situation in many parts of Odisha continues to be grim even as major rivers like Brahmani, Baitarani, Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga, Mahanadi have started receding. Large tracts of areas in Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada and Keonjhar districts are still marooned by flood water with thousands of people starving for last five days without getting relief. AIRcorrespondent reports, seven choppers have been pressed into relief operation but they could not drop dry food packets in many marooned villages as the flood water level is very high.As many as 1,176 villages are still marooned and people have taken shelter over river embankments, house roofs and trees as flood water has entered or damaged their houses. Road communication to many flood-affected areas have been cut-off leading to rise of prices of essential commodities.The death toll in the second phase of flood has increased to 20, with a total of about 22 lakh people in 3,415 villages and 12 cities in 10 of the 30 districts being affected in the second phase of flood.Meanwhile, a 4-member Central team arrived today in Odisha to assess the loss due to the current flood. The flood in Mahnadi river system in the second week of this month had affected 3.4 million people in 19 districts, causing 39 human casualty and a loss of 2,122 crore rupees to the State.
