UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi undertook an aerial survey of Kurnool and Mahabubnagar districts of Andhra Pradesh which bore the brunt of torrential rains and devastating floods.<br/><br/>Mrs. Gandhi, who arrived in Hyderabad this morning by a special plane, was accompanied by Chief Minister K Rosaiah, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, Union Law Minister and in-charge of Congress Affairs in Andhra Pradesh M Veerappa Moily.<br/><br/>Chief Minister K Rosaiah briefed on the devastation caused by the massive floods in the state.<br/><br/>A press release from the Chief Minister's Office quoted Mrs. Gandhi as saying that the Centre and State Government should join hands to provide relief to the flood victims. She said the Centre would help the state in every way. Mr. Rosaiah has urged the Centre to consider the devastating floods in the state as a national calamity and provide 6,000 crore rupees for relief works immediately.<br/><br/>In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said the preliminary estimate of damages due to heavy rains and floods arrives at 12,225 crore rupees.<br/><br/>Meanwhile the flood situation is still grim in Krishna, Guntur and Nalgonda districts with heavy inflows continuing to reach Prakasam barrage at Vijayawada city even after lull in the rains for the past two days.The administration is now focussing on Krishna and Guntur districts where as many as 200 villages are still under the threat of inundation. About 10 helicopters and 300 mechanised boats are engaged in rescue operations. Authorities are compelled to use force to evacuate people from marooned areas in Avanigadda, Diviseema, and Nagayalanka areas of Krishna district. Over 2 lakh people who rendered homeless are taking shelter in relief camps. Meanwhile, restoration od Roads and communications are in full swing in Kurnool and Mahaboobnagar districts where floodwater began to recede from the marooned areas.<br/><br/>In Karnataka, flood water is receding from the affected areas and the rescue mission has almost come to an end. Disclosing this, Mr. Paraswanath, the Secretary, Karnataka Disaster Management Authority said, they are now concentrating on relief and rehabilitation. Out of 17.8 million people affected by the flood, three lakhs 55 thousand are accommodated in 1211 relief camps. The death toll remains at 175 with no fresh death reported today.<br/><br/>The Chief Minister Mr. B.S. Yediyurappa announced that a number of padayatras will be organised all over the State for collection of funds and material for flood relief. Speaking to the newsmen in Bellary today, he also disclosed that one lakh houses will be constructed in one year for flood affected people. <br/><br/>Petroleum Minister Murli Deora has directed state fuel retailing firms to maintain uninterrupted supplies of petroleum products, especially kerosene and LPG, in the flood affects parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. According to an official press statement, in a review meeting today, Deora emphasised that the oil marketing companies should put in extra efforts in order that un-interrupted supplies reach the relief camps set up in the areas. Mr. Deora has asked the companies to mobilise fuel supply to the rescue parties and vehicles in the area. <br/><br/>The minister also asked oil companies to undertake relief and rehabilitation as part of their corporate social responsibility programme.
