In Odisha, flood situation is improving as water level in major rivers like Brahmani, Baitarani and Subarnarekha is fast receding. However, 1362 villages continue to remain marooned in flood water with thousands of helpless people in worst-hit Jajpur and Kendrapada districts still fighting the devastating flood. With relief yet to reach them even after eight days of flood, most of them have taken shelter on roof tops and river embankments. Many flood-hit people are suffering from water-borne diseases and medical teams are yet to reach their villages.The death toll in the second phase flood has reached up to 40 with two more people still missing. More than 25 lakh people in 4054 villages and 12 cities in 10 of the 30 districts have been affected.The state government has decided to stop air-dropping of dry food packets from Friday and will transport relief materials by road as water has receded in most of the flood-affected areas.Meanwhile, the Odisha government has assessed a total loss of 1145 crore rupees in the state during the second phase of flood.
