In Odisha, more than 20 lakh people in about 3,500 villages have been badly affected in the current wave of flood. As many as 19 of the 30 districts in the state have been hit by flood in Mahanadi river systems, Brahmani and Baitarni. As per the official reports, 17 people have been killed in the flodd so far.Inadequate supply of relief materials and damage of roads in many flood-affected areas have hit thousands of marooned people hard. Four helicopters have been pressed into service for air dropping food packets in affected areas of Kendrapara, Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts. Though there has been substantial decrease in the water inflow to the Hirakud reservoir, the flood situation is likely to remain grim till today as water evacuation into the Bay of Bengal has slowed down because of tidal conditions owing to full moon. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik made an aerial survey of flood-affected areas in Sambalpur, Sonepur and Bolangir districts.
