The flood situation continued to remain grim in Uttar Pradesh while it has improved in Punjab and Haryana. Major rivers like Ganga, Yamuna and Gomti are flowing above danger mark at most places in Uttar Pradesh. Ghaghra and Rapti rivers have, however, started receding in eastern part of the state, but they are still flowing above the danger mark at most places. Two persons died as a portion of their house collapsed on them due to incessant rain in Uttar Pradesh's Farrukhabad district.Flood-like situation in parts of Punjab and Haryana eased out with the authorities succeeding in plugging breaches in Yamuna and Sutlej rivers at Karnal, Sonepat, Ropar and Yamunanagar districts.Also, the floodgates of the Bhakra dam were closed by the authorities in the wake of decrease in inflow of water into the reservoir.However, many areas in Punjab's Kapurthala district continued to remain submerged under flood waters.One child was washed away in flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district.Monsoon remained active in Himachal Pradesh as intermittent rains lashed most parts of the hill state, dropping mercury sharply in tribal areas.In Andhra Pradesh, three persons were killed and crops in 4,931 hectares damaged due to the heavy rain that lashed Mahabubnagar district since Monday. Official sources said in Hyderabad that one man drowned and two others died when lightning struck them in Mahabubnagar district. Met department has predicted more rain across the state in the next 24 hours due to a low pressure area and the monsoon.West Bengal government has demanded Rs. 600 crore from the Centre for arranging alternative cultivation in drought affected areas of the state. Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta said in Kolkata that the state has suffered losses to the tune of Rs. 6,435 crore on account of drought in 11 districts. Cutting across party lines, members in the Lok Sabha Friday expressed serious concern over the floods and drought situation in the country. They also wanted a set criteria for allocation of funds for dealing with such situations. Initiating the debate, BJP member Navjot Singh Siddhu suggested that the government should come out with a time-bound policy on water conservation and related issues. He regretted that there is no long term plan to tackle the floods and droughts in the country. Anu Tandon of the Congress said that water management should come under one ministry and it should be included in the Union list.Transportation of essential commodities and petroleum products has been hit again on Imphal-Dimapur Road of National Highway-39 due to landslide in Manipur. AIR Imphal correspondent reports that the landslide occurred at a stretch about 2 kilometres away from Tadubi towards Imphal. In Orissa, at least seven persons died and about 50 others were affected in an outbreak of dengue in the state's tribal-dominated Malkangiri district in past three weeks. Officials said, the deaths were reported in Padia, MV-67 and Materu villages.
