Flood situation deteriorates in Assam & Arunachal Pradesh

The overall flood situation in Assam remains grim as administration intensified rescue works in Dhemaji district and Sadia. State Principal Secretary of Revenue department V K Peepersenia said that helicopter services have been pressed into service to air drop food items at Sadia of Tinsukia district this evening as strong current of flood water prevented the army and NDRF personnel to reach through water routes.

National and State Disaster Response Force on Saturday rescued around four thousand flood affected people in Dhemaji district. Ten relief camps have been set up by administration in Dhemaji. One youth was drowned in Marigaon district while surging water inundated some areas at Mayang and Bhuragaon in the district. State Power minister visited Tinsukia district and took stock of the situation. Around 35 thousand people are staying at relief camps in the district. Forest department has intensified patrolling at Kaziranga National Park. Surging water inundated some anti-poaching camps.

Meanwhile flood situation in Arunachal Pradesh also continues to be grim with floodwaters submerging new areas forcing the people to shift to safer places. Official sources said the situation has been deteriorating as heavy and continuous rain over past two weeks resulted in landslides causing disruption in road communication, and inundation of human settlement areas in almost all the eastern districts of the state.

Road links in Dibang Valley, Lower Dibang Valley, Anjaw, Upper Siang, West Siang, East Siang and Lohit districts have been disrupted as all the inter district roads and highways were either blocked by landslides or swept away by waters.

Dibang Valley district has remained cut off from rest of the country since last 10 days. The water level of river Dibang and its tributaries are flowing above danger level. Anjaw district was also cut off for last three days due to landslides at different locations.

All the rivers in the district were flowing above danger mark resulting inundation of large areas which submerged agricultural field and residential area. The flood situation in Siang belt has further worsened due to uninterrupted rain for past few days. Flood situation in Lohit district too remains unchanged. 16 relief camps are operating in the district with over 2300 inmates.
