The flood situation continues to remain grim in Uttar Pradesh as rain swelled rivers causing displacement of lakhs of people. According to the reports, almost one million hectare of cultivable land has been damaged and more than 470 livestock have fallen victim across 15 districts of the state. In Varanasi, several ghats are still under the water as the water level in Ganga continued to rise.The Ganga is rising at Kannauj, Allahabad, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Ghazipur and Ballia, whereas the River Yamuna is in spate at Baghpat, Auraiyya, Hamirpur, Banda and Allahabad. However, the government is yet help villagers who have been deprived of their livelihood due to waters claiming their lands.Ten rivers in the state – Sharda, Ghaghra, Ramganga, Ganga, Yamuna, Betwa, Kain, Gomti, Sai and Saryu – are in spate and have devastated large areas. The river Gomti has flooded many villages in Sitapur, Lucknow and Sultanpur, while Sai river has wreaked havoc in parts of Lucknow and Rae Bareli. Flood water of Ghaghra and Saryu rivers have gushed into villages in Barabanki, Faizabad, Gorakhpur, Basti, Kushinagar, Bahraich, Gonda and Shravasti. More than six hundred villages in Terai region and eastern Uttar Pradesh including Ballia, Chandauli, Allahabad and Ghzipur are inundated by the flood.AIR correspondent reports, the flood water of Ganga has submerged hundreds of villages in Varanasi, Chandauli, Ballia and Ghazipur, including many city localities and the official residence of the district magistrate of Ghazipur. Authorities are trying their best to build a Ring Bundh where Ghaghra had damaged the embankment in Santkabirnagar on Friday. But they are facing stiff resistance from the gushing streams of the river. At present around six lakh people have been rendered homeless in the state. They are compelled to take refuge in the relief camps and in other safer places, waiting for the floodwater to recede.
