Flood situation continues to be grim in several parts of the country

Several parts of the country continue to reel under severe flood. Ten more people died and thousands were affected as flood waters inundated low lying areas following incessant rains in north India. Uttar Pradesh continues to reel under severe flood as more than 700 villages across the state have come under its grip. The situation remained grim in western and Terai regions due to additional release of more than 5 lakh cusecs of water from Narora and Hathini Kund barrages. At least 8 people have perished in house collapse and drowning incidents. AIR correspondent reports that the incessant rain continues in western UP while it has ceased in eastern part. The flood situation in North Bihar continues to be grim as water level of river Kosi, Bagmati and Gandak is continuously swelling all along its course. AIR Patna correspondent reports that as many as three hundred villages have submerged. Even the historic Bhitiharwa Ashram set up by Mahatma Gandhi during the Champaran movement has been inundated with flood water. Major areas of Narkatiyaganj town have also been submerged. Surging water of turbulent Bagmati has entered fresh areas of Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur districts of the state. Vehicular traffic between Muzaffarpur and Sheohar has been paralysed following knee deep water is flowing on the highways. Jawans of the NDRF team equipped with sophisticated motorboats and life-saving jackets have been pressed into service in affected areas. Over Five thousand persons have been rescued so far and they were shifted to safer places. AIR correspondent reports that the state government has launched a massive relief operation in the flood-hit areas.After heavy rains for a week, the national capital back to a sunny and humid day without water logging and massive traffic jams which were a regular feature during the past few days.Light rains lashed several parts of Rajasthan with Ajmer recording highest 52.9 mm rainfall. According to a MET forecast, light to moderate rainfall would occur at few places in eastern and at isolated places in western parts of the state. The threat of floods hangs over many North Karnataka districts and coastal districts of Udupi and Kanara. The Government has asked the army to gear up to prepare for the situation and asked people living near river banks to move to safer places. Two women washed away on Thursday in flashfloods in Chincholi taluk of Gulbarga district, taking the toll of rain related incidents to ten over the past week in Karnataka. Many houses have collapsed leading to grievous injuries to the inhabitants.
