Flood situation continues to be grim in several parts of the country

The flood situation continued to remain grim in several parts of the country. At least 13 people were killed in rain and flood related incidents. In the national capital, river Yamuna rose a metre over the danger mark with a looming threat of flooding low-lying areas. Delhi government has evacuates people to safer places. The water level in the Yamuna rose to 206.24 metres, up by 1.41 metres from the danger mark after water released from Hathanikund Barrage in Haryana reached the city. The Old Yamuna Bridge, connecting east Delhi with the heart of the national capital was closed for rail and road traffic yesterday.In Haryana, 74,800 cusecs of water has been released into Yamuna river from Hathnikund barrage last evening. The situation in ten villages of Yamuna Nagar District, where water has started entering houses, is grave. In Nakum village, a large chunk of land has been eroded affecting the residents of the village. The villagers have been shifted to safer places. Deputy Commissioner Yamuna Nagar Ashok Sangwan has said that the Administration is working hard to provide relief to the affected villages. Meanwhile, Haryana Principal Secretary of Irrigation Department, Mr. S.S. Dhillon said that water is receding considerably in Yamuna at Hathnikund barrage and it would further reduce by this evening. Flood-like situation continued unabated in Haryana with over 97 villages in Yamunanagar, Panipat, Karnal and Sonepat districts submerged under water.In Uttar Pradesh, at least four persons were killed in rain-related incidents. Major rivers – Ganga, Yamuna, Ramganga, and Ghaghra are still in spate at several places. The level of Ganga is rising in Bulandshahar while Ghaghra is still above the danger mark in Faizabad and Ballia. The river Rapti is flowing 41 centimetres above the danger mark in Gorakhpur. Our correspondent reports that the rescue and relief operation is going on in full swing in all the flood affected districts. The chief minister Ms Mayawati has instructed the authorities to assess the losses. She has said that the repair and reconstruction work of roads, bridges and other infrastructure faclilities should be taken up on priority basis. Moderate to heavy rain lashed several parts of the state during last 24 hours. More than 20 districts are still flood affected in the state. In Arunachal Pradesh, at least eight people were buried alive under the debris following massive landslides triggered by incessant rain in Upper Siang district. The district remained cut off after a vitalbridge connecting the area with other places was badly damaged due to flash flood and landslide.In Assam, one person was drowned and around 1.5 lakh people were affected in the flash flood which hit the northern districts of Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Golaghat and Sonitpur following incessant rains in the upper reaches. Floods has inundated larges areas of Kaziranga forcing the animals to come out of the national park to move towards the highlands of neighbouring hill district of Karbi Anglong and nearby tea estates for shelter.
