Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is appealing for help as floods affect up to 14 million people across his country. Record breaking floods have submerged entire villages and more than half a million hectares of farm land across Pakistan. The floodwaters from the north-west of the country are now pouring into the southern province of Sindh. Gilani says the loss of lives and infrastructure is ‘colossal’. Government officials say more rain was expected in the next 48 hours and half a million had people have been evacuated from risk areas in the south. According to UN estimates, the nearly two-week-old disaster across the largely impoverished country hard hit by Taliban-linked violence, washed away entire villages and killed at least 1,600.
