Flood fury in Andhra, Karnataka and Maharashtra: Defence forces intensify rescue operations

Army, Navy and Airforce personnel have intensified rescue operations in the flood affected areas of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. Eight MI-8 and six Chetak helicopters have been moved from the airbase in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Retreating monsoon claimed 12 more lives as the death toll due to torrential rains and rampaging floods in the two States soared to 205 today. Karnataka, which reported all the 12 fresh deaths, accounted for 168 fatalities and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh 37, where the flood situation in Krishna district remained grim.<br/>The withdrawing monsoon lashing with all its fury has taken a toll of 23 lives in Maharashtra during the last two days. 13 deaths were reported in Ratnagiri district while Solapur recorded nine and Sindhudurg recorded one death due to heavy rainfall.<br/>Centre has rushed another contingent of 694 trained personnel and motorised boats to intensify rescue operations in parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh which have witnessed the fury of the retreating monsoon over the past couple of days. Senior Home ministry officials are in constant touch with state authorities and other agencies and the situation is being monitored on round-the-clock basis.<br/>Centre has already released the first instalment of 156.83 crore rupees from the Calamity Relief Fund to Andhra Pradesh and a second installment of the same amount is required to be released in December. Karnataka has already received 52.26 crore rupees as the first installment of Central share of the Calamity Relief Fund and an equal amount is due in December.<br/>UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi will make an aerial survey of the flood affected districts of Kurnool and Mahbubnagar in Andhra Pradesh tomorrow. According to official sources in Hyderabad, she will be accompanied by Chief Minister K Rosaiah, who will update her on the situation and various relief measures undertaken by the state government.Mrs. Gandhi along with Home Minister P Chidambaram will also undertake an aerial survey of flood-ravaged areas in Bellary district of Karnataka tomorrow. Union ministers M Veerappa Moily and Mallikarjun Kharge will be accompanying them.
