Flood fury continues in northern parts of country

In Uttar Pradesh flood situation is remain grim in western and eastern parts of the state. About nine district in western region including Bijnore, Rampur, Moradabad, Saharanpur ,Bareilly, Pilibhit, Farukkhabad, Mathura and Badaun, districts are worst affected in flood and hundreds of villages of these districts are marooned with waters of flooded Yamuna, Ramganga, Kosi, and Ganga rivers. AIR Lucknow correspondent reports the Chief Minister Mayawati today made aerial survey of flood affected Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnore, Moradabad and Bareilly districts. In Bijonre, she said that centre must provide about 225 crore rupees for flood affected districts. She directed officials for providing adequate relief to the people affected with flood in different district. In Bareilly, All India Radio and Doordarshan premises are still water logged and no broadcast and telecast of programmes is taking place. In flood affected districts, hundred of houses are damaged and thousands of hectares of agricultural land have been destroyed. Rail and road traffic are also badly hit in these areas. Flood continued to play havoc in Moradabad where the flood water has crept into several posh colonies and affected a large population. In Bijnore, flood packets were dropped from Army helicopters to the affected population. In Mathura the overflowing Yamuna River has inundated several temples at Goverdhan. Yamuna is flowing above the danger mark in the district. Meanwhile at least nine people died in rain- related incidents in the state during last 24 hours. According to the Central Water Commission, most of the major rivers including Ganga Yamuna, Sharda, and Ghaghara are flowing above danger mark at several places in the state.The National Highway from Panipat to Khatima is partially opened but Delhi -Lucknow and Delhi -Haridwar are still not functional. However National Highway 87 has been opened after twelve hours of closure.The flood water entered All India Radio and Doordarshan complex in Bareilly. AIR correspondent reports that the broadcasting of programmes have been affected badly.Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Defence minister A.K. Antony conducted an aerial survey of flood-hit Moradabad, Rampur and Bijnore districts. Both the leaders also took stock of the situation.In Uttarakhand, six more people were killed in a rain related incident whereas rescue and relief operation is in full swing with the help of Defence Personnel, ITBP and NDRF which were lashed due to incessant rain since last several days.AIR correspondent reports that Governor Margaret Alva has made an aerial survey in the affected areas of Garhwal.In Haryana, due to heavy rain in adjoining hills, the water level at Hathini Kund Barage is increasing continuously. AIR correspondent reports that 1,60,000 cusec water was discharged on Tuesday from the barage in Yamuna. River Yamuna is flowing over two meters above the danger mark. With fresh release of water from the Hatnikund barrage and heavy rains in the upper catchments areas, the water level in the river has swelled up to 206.92 meters, 2.09 meters above the danger mark. According to officials, the water level is expected to rise further.Old Yamuna Bridge was closed for traffic on Tuesday itself due to the rising water level in the river.According to Northern Railway officials, 27 local trains have been cancelled, 53 trains terminated short of destination and another 65 have been diverted.A total of over 8300 people have been evacuated from the low lying areas along the banks of the river. They have been shifted to over 1300 relief tents set up by the authorities.
