Flood fury continues in North India

Flood fury continues in North India as incessant rain continued to lash the region. A total of 1717 persons have been rescued from several flood hit areas of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar by the National Disaster Response Force. Over 1300 personnel of NDRF have been deployed by the National Disaster Management Authority with 272 rescue boats for the rescue operations in flood hit areas of Uttarakhand, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi. According to Secretary NDMA, Mr. Anil Bhusan Prasad all possible efforts are being made by NDRF to evacuate stranded people with the help of local authorities.In Uttarakhand, four more people were killed in rain related incidents, whereas a total of about eighty persons have died following heavy rains and landslides during the past few days. Meanwhile, district authorities with the help of defence personnel, ITBP & NDRF are busy in relief work in the state. Met department has predicted light to moderate rain may occur at few places in coming 24 hours. Widespread rain also continued to lash several parts of Delhi and its neighbouring areas with the city recording 27.3 mm of rainfall till 8.30 this morning. The rain guage at Palam recorded 73.4 mm of rainfall. The national capital has received a total of 1031.5 mm of rain this season, 66 percent above the normal. Although the Met department predicts the monsoon to start withdrawing in the next two days, heavy showers are expected to continue over some areas.Meanwhile in Punjab, twenty-four thousand cusecs of water has been released in Sutlej river today due to heavy inflow of water in the reservoir from the upper reaches. The released water inundated the low-lying areas near the banks of Sutlej river. Meanwhile, rain is not reported from any parts of the State today but the sky is overcast.
