In Assam, incessant rain in the catchment areas of neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, has inundated over 120 villages in Dhemaji district. The surging water of Jiadhal river washed away a portion of National Highway No. 52 at Bhebeli area yesterday.
As a result, surface communication to Dhemaji with rest of the state has been disrupted. Road communication between Assam and three districts of Arunachal Pradesh, has also been disrupted. Flash flood also affected normal life in some areas of Gohpur in Sonitpur district.
State’s Principal Secretary of Revenue said that instructions have been given to district administration of Dhemaji, to take all rescue and relief measures.
Our correspondent reports that around 63 thousand people are still reeling under water at three revenue circles of Dhemaji district. National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force are being pressed into service.
People have taken shelter at high embankments and other safer places. District administration and various civil society organisations are distributing relief materials. Surging water also damaged seasonal crops and fisheries.
