In Assam, the overall flood situation in Dhemaji district remained unchanged for the second day on Monday as rain continues to lash the catchments of the turbulent Jia Dhol river. As many as 35 villages of the district have come under the grip of the flood, affecting over 35 thousand population. The high-current flash flood washed away houses at Kachukhana- Kacharigaon and Kochgaon in the district. AIR Guwahati Correspondent reports that the affected families are taking shelter on the national highway and other high places. The high current river waters caused a threat for the national highway No. 52 at Samarajan. The district authorities have taken up relief and rescue works in the flood-affected areas on war-footing. Meanwhile, several Bhutan-originated tributaries have created havoc in Dhubri and Goalpara districts in Lower Assam. The water levels in most of the tributaries, including Beki, Gaurang, Sonkosh and Tipkai, are rising rapidly following release of excess water, reportedly from the Kurishu dam in neighbouring Bhutan. A number of agricultural villages are facing the danger of river bank erosion. AIR Correspondent repports, the overall flood situation in Assam remained grim as incessant rains continue to create havoc in the catchments of the neighbouring hilly areas. While the Jia Dhol river is causing threat to many villages in Dhemaji district, several tributaries of the Brahmaputra river, originating from Bhutan, are creating havoc in a number of villages in Goalpara and Dhubri districts in Lower Assam. Although official figures are not available immediately, the flood waters reportedly caused major damages to the standing crops, agricultural lands and dwelling houses to a great extent in the three districts.Vast areas of agricultural land are being damaged due to river bank erosion. In Bilasipara area of Dhubri district, a number of historical villages are being threatened by erosion of river banks of the major tributaries like Gaurang, Tipkai, Sonkosh and Beki. The State Government has alerted the district authorities in view of possible threat of floods. It asked the authorities to equip the disaster management apparatus to face any eventuality.
