In Syria, five people were killed and several were injured when security forces fired on anti-regime protesters today near a mosque in Daraa. A rights activist said hundreds of people had gathered at the Omari mosque to prevent police from storming it. He said security forces fired live bullets and teargas on protesters staging a sit-in near the mosque. Syria has witnessed a string of small protests demanding the end of the ruling Assad regime for one week now.
