Five Russian canoeists banned from Rio Olympics

Five Russian canoe sprint athletes – including the 2012 Olympic champion Alexander Dyachenko – and seven Swimmers including reigning world 100-meter breaststroke champion Yulia Efimova have been banned from competing at next month's Rio Olympics. The International Canoe Federation (ICF) took the decision after they were implicated by the McLaren report. These include Dyachenko, European Champion Andrey Kraitor, Olympic bronze medallist Alexey Korovashkov along with Elena Aniushina and Natalia Podolskaia. World swimming's governing body FINA said imposed the ban for their link to recent allegations of a major doping cover-up by Russian authorities. Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee, IOC, said, Russian athletes with previous doping bans would be barred from the Rio Games. This follows IOC's decision not to impose a blanket ban on the entire Russian team over allegations of state-sponsored doping. Russia's top Olympic official, Alexander Zhukov, said, a total of 13 Russians would be ineligible due to previous doping bans and they would be withdrawn from the team.
