Romanian officials say five miners were killed following an explosion yesterday in a coal mine in the western part of the country. The officials in the town of Uricani said the workers were servicing an electric transformer when the blast occurred and there were no survivors. The coal mine employs some 800 people. It is one of the oldest in Romania and is due to be shut down by 2018.
