In Afghanistan, five members of a family, including four children, were killed today when a roadside bomb struck their vehicle in southern Kandahar province. Border security commander Abdul Razaq said the bombing occurred as the family was heading home after visiting a shrine in the Spin Boldak district, near the Pakistan border. He believed the family's vehicle wasn't targeted but hit a roadside bomb meant for police or other officials who are frequently targeted by militants.

Meanwhile, nine Taliban members surrendered along with arms and ammunition before the Afghan authorities yesterday in Marawarah district of eastern Kunar province. A ISAF statement said the nine men reportedly arrived at the compound of the Kunar governor to accept the offer of reconciliation they had heard on the radio. Afghan government is in the process of drafting a comprehensive reconciliation policy to lure militants into the national mainstream by offering them incentives.
