Five lakh fake job cards created under MNREGA in Karnataka

Five lakh fake job cards were created under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in Karnataka. The Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Jagadish Shetter informed media persons in Bangalore on Thursday that on inspection of 32 percent of 62.5 lakh job cards issued, five lakh were discovered as fake and cancelled. For the first time in the country Karnataka will appoint retired district Judge as ombudsmen in all the districts to address grievances regarding the Scheme. He noted that 33 spot inspection squads have also been formed to check works under the scheme. Regarding misappropriation of NREGS funds, the minister informed that cases were lodged against 336 officials and 272 are suspended. To prevent fraud, he informed that the job cards will now include bank account number, family photograph and social category to which they belong. During 09-10 the State received Rs.2407 crore from the Central Government under NREGA and utilised Rs.2569 crore, thereby completing 5.4 lakh works.
