Five get death sentence in Haryana honour killing case

In Haryana, Karnal Session court on Tuesday pronounced severest punishment to seven convicts in the Manoj and Babli murder case, Haryana`s first case related to honour killing.<br/><br/>The court awarded death sentence to Babli`s brother Suresh, Uncle Rajender, her maternal uncle Balu Ram and his two sons Satish and Gurdev of Jhakoli village, whereas Khap head and distant relative of Babli Gangaraj is sentenced to life term and driver Mandeep Singh, in whose vehicle the duo were kidnapped and murdered is sentenced to seven year rigorous imprisonment. The court has also ordered action against two policemen involved in the case and one lakh rupees compensation for family of Manoj.<br/><br/>Manoj and Babli, the young Jat couple of same Gotra ( subcaste) from Karora village in Kaithal district wed on May18,2007 invoking the ire of the Babli`s family. Babli`s family approached Khap Panchayat and Khap Panchayats dictated them to dissolve their marriage and pronounced social boycott of the couple. The couple was done to death by girls family and their supporters in June 2007. The bodies of the couple were recovered from the Barwala branch canal near Sandala village in Hisar district on June23, 2007.<br/><br/> Talking to AIR correspondent Ashwani Kumar, IG (Law and Order) at Haryana Police Headquarters Dr Rajwantpal Singh said that it is a longtime due landmark judgement and Haryana Police welcome this historical Judgment of the court. He said that Police will take strict legal action against anybody involved in such cases. Women organisations in the state have also welcomed the judgment of the court.<br/>
