Fishermen issue to be discussed at minister level meeting between India & Sri Lanka in April 2023: Union Minister Dr. L. Murugan

Union Minister of State for fisheries Dr. L. Murugan today said that the fishermen issue will be discussed at the minister level meeting to be held between India and Sri Lanka in April this year. <br />''<br />''Speaking to the media at Chennai today, he said that the Government was very concerned about the plight of the fishermen and their economy. <br />''<br />''Dr. Murugan said that the Government had provided more than 50 thousand GPS instruments to the fishermen to identify the sea boundaries as a precautionary measure. He said that the fishermen issue was taken up even during his recent Sri Lankan Visit. He said a joint-level committee of secretaries have been set up between the Countries to find a remedy for the fishermen issues.<br />''<br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">To another query, he said that Tamilnadu was the first to be approved for setting up sea weed growing farms in Ramanathapuram and Pudukottai. <br />''<br />''He said that 1900 crore rupees was allocated for setting up fishing harbours with state of the art infrastructure at Kasimedu in Chennai, Tiruvottiyur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Villupuram. The minister said that 682 deep sea vessels have been given to the fishermen in the State at a cost of One Crore 20 lakh rupees. He said 60 percent of the beneficiaries were from SC and ST communities and women.</span>
