Fiscal deficit at 76.4 pc of Budget estimate in Apr-Aug

The government's fiscal deficit in the first five months of the current fiscal stood at 4.1 lakh crore rupees, or 76.4 per cent of the budget estimates for the entire 2016-17 fiscal. The fiscal deficit in the April to August period of the previous year had stood at 66.5 per cent of the budget estimates. The fiscal deficit is the gap between revenue and expenditure. According to data released by the Controller General of Accounts, tax revenue was 26.6 percent of the estimates.Total receipts of the government during the first five months of this fiscal were 27.3 per cent of the estimates for the current year. Total expenditure during this period was 40.5 per cent of the entire year's estimates. The revenue deficit during these five months was 91.8 per cent of budget estimates.
