First win in four decades for Seychelles opposition LDS

Seychelles Democratic Alliance, LDS, which was in opposition for last four decades in Seychelles has won parliamentary elections. Official results give the opposition coalition fifteen seats in the new National Assembly, five more than the People's Party of President James Michel. Mr Michel's People's Party has been in power ever since the return of multi-party democracy in 1991, and before that during almost 16 years of one-party rule.

Before the result was announced, Mr Michel promised to work with the new assembly.

The LDS consists of the main opposition party, the liberal Seychelles National Party, SNP, and four smaller opposition parties.
