The first train with fifty wagons of water reached Chennai from Jolarpet in Vellore district on Friday.<br />'' <br />'' The water has been evacuated from the fifty wagons of the train at Villivakkam station. Through pipelines, it was brought to the Metrowater main tank at Kilpauk in Chennai for filtering and distribution.<br />'' <br />'' Railway officials told AIR News that one more rake with fifty wagons has reached Jolarpet station for carrying more water to the metropolitan city.<br />'' <br />'' To overcome the scarcity of water due to the failure of monsoon for two successive years, alternate methods are being employed by the administration to meet the water needs in Chennai.<br />'' <br />'' More desalination plants and a new reservoir are on the anvil as the long term plans. Fetching water from agricultural wells and stone quarries from the outskirts of Chennai and running water special trains from Jolarpet are the short term options being employed.<br />'' <br />'' The local bodies minister SP Velumani has said the supply from Jolarpet will be augmented to ten million litres a day and will continue for about six months.<br />'' <br />'' A sum of 66 crore rupees has been allocated for the special trains. The Railways will be paid 8.6 lakh rupees for a trip. The water special trains supplement the efforts of officials to meet the water needs of the parched city.
