In Bihar, the first phase of Panchayat elections in 57 blocks of the state is progressing amidst tight security. Polling will continue till 5 in the evening. However, in the Naxal affected areas, polling will end at 3 pm. AIR Patna correspondent reports that no incidents of violence have been reported so far from any part of the state. Moderate turnout of voters is reported due to the intense heat, people are also engaged in the harvesting of crops. Two presiding officers have been arrested in Saharasa and Betiah on charges of irregularities in the conduct of elections. Over two hundred persons have been arrested as precautionary measures. Over 46 lakhs electorates will decide the fortune of one lakh 43 thousand one hundred eighty five candidates. During this phase, voters will elect 28 thousand six hundred 39 candidates for posts of Mukhiya Panch, Sarpanch, Members of Gram Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti and District Boards.The Panchayat elections will conclude on May 18 after nine more phases. The second phase of elections will be held on the 24th of this month.
