In Uttar Pradesh, a first-ever 'Kisan Panchayat' is being held today in Lucknow to discuss problems of farmers related to land acquisition, irrigation, electricity, agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry etc in detail and dispose of them on priority basis.An official spokes person told AIR correspondent that in this Panchayat, issues of land acquisition and compensation will also be discussed. The Chief Minister Ms. Mayawati will also be meeting with farmer's representatives. The government has announced to amend its present policy for land acquisition declared last year and final touches to the new policy will be given after the discussions with the farmers' representatives and considering their view point.Meanwhile, Bharatiya Kisan Union, under whose umbrella the farmers' representatives will be meeting with state government, has submitted a charter of demands to the sate government. BKU General Secretary Rakesh Tikait has said that setting up of a Land Acquisition Compensation Dispute Appellate Authority besides banning acquisition of all type of agricultural land in the state are included in the a draft memorandum.
