The first ever Commonwealth games were held in 1930, in the Canadian city of Hamilton. At that time, they were called the British Empire Games. The event was renamed as British Empire and commonwealth games in 1954 and the British Commonwealth games in 1970. It was in the year 1978 when the Game came to be known as the Commonwealth Games. Australia has been highest achieving team for ten games, England for seven and Canada for one. India won its first ever medal in 1934. Rashid Anwar won a Bronze in the walterweight category. India's 69 medals in the 2002 games, is its best performance ever.
