Firing by Italian crew error of judgement: Coast Guard

The Coast Guard Inspector General, Western range, S P S Basra termed the killing of two fishermen of Neendakara Coast in Kerala on Wednesday by naval personnel of an Italian vessel was an error of judgement.

Speaking to media persons in Kochi, Mr. Basra said the ship did not report about the incident to the coast guard. He said the matter was informed to the coast guard by the coastal police at Neendakara.

Stating that it was not correct on the part of the Italian vessel to fire on unarmed fishermen, Mr.Basra noted that the vessel was in the country's exclusive economic zone when the incident occurred. He said an FIR has been registered and the police investigation is going on.
