Fire on Korean tanker near Mumbai injured 7

An outbreak of fire following an explosion aboard a Korean Chemical Tanker , 'Royal Diamond 7' today claimed the life of one south Korean crew member and injured six others including four Indian local workers engaged by the vessel in Mumbai yesterday (Saturday).

The deceased identified as Munhyeon Seok, Bosun, a South Korean national, succumbed to burn injuries while being shifted from J J Hospital to Masina Hospital in Mumbai yesterday.

According to a press statement issued by the Mumbai Port Trust the Korean owned 9500 DWT chemical tanker Royal Diamond 7 reported to the Mumbai port's vessel traffic system and control station about the explosion and a tug was dispatched immediately to bring the injured to the shore.

The three injured were then immediately rushed to nearby hospitals by abulance of the Port Trust's Fire Brigade. The statement also added that the crew members had sustained burn injuries of serious nature and are being treated in hospital.

Meanwhile, the senior management of Mumbai Port visited the chemical tanker 'Royal Diamond – 7' to have a first-hand assessment of the incident. The vessel was earlier anchored near the Buthcer Island off the coast of Mumbai and it has now been decided to shift the tanker to Outer-Anchorage.
