FIR filed against Pravin Togadia for his alleged hate speech

In Gujarat, Bhavnagar Police has lodged an FIR against VHP Chief Pravin Togadia for his alleged hate speech. The VHP Chief had allegedly said that Muslims should be stopped from buying property in Hindu-majority areas. Mr Togadia has, however, denied making any such remarks and described the media reports as a conspiracy against him. He has also sent legal notice to media houses. Bhavnagar Police swung into action after the Election Commission sought the recording of Mr Togadia's speech and directed the police to probe the matter.

Congress and other political parties have strongly criticised the VHP leader. Congress' Legal Department Secretary KC Mittal has written to the EC demanding strict action.

Aam Aadmi Party has demanded action against him for vitiating the peaceful atmosphere during elections. In a statement issued in New Delhi, the AAP also demanded that Mr Narendra Modi should take strict action against the VHP Leader.

The Left parties have sought immediate arrest of Mr Togadia. CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury told reporters that the Gujarat Chief Minister should take appropriate action immediately.

Janta Dal (U) leader, KC Tyagi said that Mr Togadia seems to be influenced by Taliban mentality.

Naresh Gujaral of Shiromani Akali Dal said anybody who speaks this kind of language has no place in our society.

BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi has said that he should be very careful while making any statement.
