FinMin to PSBs: Ensure every farmer household gets Kisan Credit Card

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today asked the Public Sector Banks, PSBs to ensure that every farmer household gets a Kisan Credit Card. Appreciating the performance of PSBs, he emphasised that existing accounts of farmers should be quickly replaced by Debit Cards under the new scheme. Talking to media persons after holding a review meeting with Chief Executive Officers of the Public Sector Banks and financial instituitions, Mr.Mukherjee said that the net profit of PSBs has gone up from 44 thousand 90 hundred crores rupees to over 49 thousand five hundred crore rupees in 2011-12 despite a difficult economic scenario. Mr Mukherjee expressed satisfaction over the growth in agriculture credit. He said against the target of 4.75 lakh crore rupees, PSBs have disbursed over 5 lakh crore rupees. During the current fiscal, banks have been given the target of 5.75 lakh crore rupees. He also directed PSBs to implement Education Loan Scheme and said, the new scheme of educational loan for vocational courses should be given priority. Mr Mukherjee said, there has been an increase of 15 per cent in flow of credit to minorities as compared to last year.The Minister said, Financial inclusion has been a great success and more than 74 thousand villages with a population of over 2000 persons have a banking facililty now. Over 3 crore bank accounts have been opened in these villages. On Non-Performing Assets, NPAs issue, Mr Mukherjee said, some banks have reduced their NPAs but much have to be done in this connection. The Finance Minister also set up an ambitious target of every family having a bank account. He also asked PSBs to examine the possibility of making National Electronic Fund Transfer, NEFT transaction upto one lakh rupees free of charge. He added that PSBs must promote electronic mode of transactions over other modes.
