Financial grants to village schools to open sanitation clubs

Government is planning to give the financial grants to village schools to open sanitation clubs to create awareness among the students about the health impacts of open defecation. Addressing the groups of liberated manual scavengers in New Delhi today, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said that the center is considering to increase the grant for the construction of individual toilets in rural areas. He said it will also focus on the implementation of sanitation related issues at gram panchayat level. Mr. Ramesh said that country stands at third place in terms of economic development but it has an astounding numbers of 60 percent people defecating in the open. He urged the political parties to bring issues like safe drinking water and sanitation on the top of their political agenda.
