Finance Ministry nod for Rs 1000 minimum monthly pension plan for workers in organised sector

The Finance Ministry has approved a proposal for providing a minimum monthly pension of 1,000 rupees to the workers of the organised sector, under the Employees' Pension Scheme. This would benefit around 27 lakh people. Pensioners are expected to get benefit with effect from April 1 this year. The government will provide additional contribution of over 1,200 crore rupees to ensure the minimum monthly pension.A government official said that the proposal has been cleared. Union Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes is, however, yet to decide whether it is to be taken to the Cabinet for approval. At present, subscribers get 500 rupees per month, despite working for 30 years. The Finance Ministry has also approved a proposal for raising the basic wage ceiling under the Employees Provident Fund Scheme from the existing 6,500 rupees to 15,000 rupees per month.
