Final journey of Jyoti Basu begins

The final journey of CPI patriarch Jyoti Basu has begun in Kolkata. Thousand of mourners have thronged the route of his last journey to have glimpse of departed leader. Basu will be accorded a full state honour and a 21 gun salute before his body is handed over to hospital in Kolkata for medical research. <br/><br/> His body is being taken from the funeral parlor 'Peace Haven' to the CPI(M) Headquarters at Alimuddin Street. It will later be taken to the Writers Building the State Secretariat for a few minutes where the Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya will place a wreath on the body. The body then be taken to the Assembly premises where it will be kept there from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. <br/><br/>The final journey will begin from the assembly premises at 3 p.m. A guard of honour will be given to him at Moharkunj – a park near SSKM Hospital to which the body will be handed over for medical research. This will be in accordance with his will.<br/><br/>A number of dignitaries are arriving in Kolkata to attend the final journey. They include UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister H.D. Devegowda, Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, several Cabinet Ministers, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Mrs. Sushma Swaraj, BJP leader L.K. Advani, Governor of Tripura, some Chief Ministers, and leaders of several political parties.<br/><br/>The Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will lead a 40-member delegation to pay tributes to Jyoti Basu. The Bhutanese Foreign Minister will also attend the procession.<br/><br/>Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh visited the CPI(M) Headquarters yesterday to pay floral tributes to Jyoti Basu. They also signed the condolence book.<br/>
