Final hearing of Cauvery water disputes case will begin from July 11th: SC

The Supreme Court today said that the final hearing on the Cauvery water disputes case will begin from 11th of July, this year. The apex court said it will continue hearing for 15 consecutive working days.<br/><br/>The final hearing will be held on the appeals filed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala against the 2007 award of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal (CWDT). A bench headed by Justices Dipak Misra said that all interim orders of releasing 2000 cusecs of water by Karnataka will continue to be in force till further orders.<br/><br/>The Tamil Nadu government's counsel alleged in the court that Kerala is drawing water in excess to build check dams across inter-state Bhavani river, which is a tributary of Cauvery, for its irrigation project. <br/><br/>The allegations were denied by counsel for Kerala who said the state is not using the Cauvery water to build the dam or the irrigation project. The counsel said that the height of dam will be at the optimum level and would not hinder the flow of water from the river. <br/><br/>Responding to the contention, the bench, said the dam project cannot be stalled but the counsel for Kerala may give an undertaking that the flow of water will not be hindered.

The apex court said it will continue hearing for 15 consecutive working days.<br/><br/>The Tamil Nadu government alleged in the court that Kerala is trying to build a dam from Cauvery water, drawing in excess of what has been allocated to it by tribunal. The Kerala government denied Tamil Nadu's charges, telling the Apex Court that it is not using the Cauvery water for building the dam.<br/><br/>The Supreme Court took an undertaking from Kerala's counsel and asked him to inform the Tamil Nadu government immediately on the issue.
