The government has constituted a study team to examine the possibility of a common tax code for service tax and central excise, which could be adopted to harmonize the two legislations. The team, to be headed by a retired Indian Revenue Service officer MK Gupta, was constituted by the Finance Ministry. An official release in New Delhi said that the government has asked the Study Team to submit its report by the end of September this year.
