Filing of nominations for first phase of Assembly elections in Assam ends today

In Assam, the filing of nominations for the first phase of assembly elections closes today. 62 constituencies spread over 13 districts of Upper Assam, Barak Valley and two hill districts of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar, will go to polls on the 4th of next month in this phase. A total of 172 candidates have filed their nominations so far. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on Friday. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is the 21st of this month. Meanwhile, ex-Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Anowara Taimur is likely to join AIUDF after denial of party ticket from Dalgaon constituency by Congress. AIUDF is likely to announce its second list of candidates within a day or two. Asom Gana Parishad has announced its final list of candidates in 4 constituencies. With this, the party nominees goes up to 104. It has declared Ex-Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Prafulla Kumar Mahanta as party candidate at Samaguri constituency in Nagaon district. It may be recalled that Asom Gana Parishad earlier declared Mahanta as its nominee for Barhampur constituency. The party has pre-poll alliance with BPPF and Gana-Sakti.Trinmool Congress also has announced its list of candidates in 55 constituencies for the ensuing Assembly polls. Meanwhile, State Election Department sources said that additional 150 para-military forces will be deployed by 20th of this month to ensure violence-free election in the state. 100 companies have already arrived.The notification for the second phase will be issued on Friday.
